  The anatomy course lays the foundation for medical studies, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure of the human body and the relationships between its anatomical systems.   Pathology is an introduction to the theory of diseases. This course provides an in-depth understanding of how diseases develop in the human body, what a disease or the damage it causes looks like, and how this damage is diagnosed. Students will learn about the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, focusing on how various disease agents cause the development of a tissue disorder that leads to the disease, along with functional and morphological changes in cells and tissues. The emphasis of the course is on integrating pathological and clinical findings in the process of diagnosing and treating diseases.

  Extensive clinical exposure to community medicine is an essential component of a medical education; most preventive medicine, initial diagnoses, and primary care are performed in community settings.
  
  Understanding and studying the patient’s journey both within the community and from the community to the hospital and back is a critical aspect of medical training. Indeed, this is one of the guiding principles of the Dina Recanati School of Medicine’s innovative teaching approach. The process begins during the first week of studies with early clinical exposure, and continues as one of the central themes throughout the entire program.
  
  At Reichman University, in the clinical years (Years 3 and 4) students will be exposed to community medicine as part of their clerkships in internal medicine, pediatrics, mental health, gynecology, and consultative medicine.
  
  Students’ exposure to family medicine will take place over a four-week period, and experience in pediatrics will take place over two weeks. Mental health and gynecology will each involve one week of exposure, and consultative medicine will be integrated into the rotations. During these weeks, pairs of students will spend their mornings in doctors’ clinics, actively participating in taking patient anamneses, conducting physical examinations, discussing differential diagnoses, and contributing to discussions on further diagnostic processes and treatment plans.

  This course focuses on cultivating a deeper understanding of patients beyond their medical conditions. Students will learn the importance of recognizing patients first and foremost as human beings, with desires, concerns, and vulnerabilities that are constantly forming and changing within rich historical, social, moral, and cultural contexts. They will learn to view their role as care-providers not solely in terms of administering medical treatment, but as providing the kind of care that requires empathy, compassion, sympathy, humility, and, of course, knowledge. This approach involves rising above ourselves, setting aside our egos, and focusing on the patient and the societal factors that contributed to their circumstances. The goal of the course is to introduce students to the core principles of bioethics, medical humanism, professionalism, and the philosophy of medicine — an understanding of which is a necessary component of medical training.

  In today’s digital age, media plays a pivotal role in shaping our behavior both as individuals and as a public, as well as in global processes. However, the use of digital media is a double-edged sword; on the one hand, it provides immediate access to vast amounts of information with the simple click of a button, and allows for a high level of flexibility — digital content can be updated at any moment. However, digital media also presents significant challenges. The rapid spread of misinformation and fake news on social media can result in harmful personal, societal, and global consequences, often with little ability to trace or control the origins of false information.
  
  This course is designed to equip medical students with the skills necessary for effective communication through various communication tools. The focus will be on understanding the capabilities of written media, digital media, and other essential tools for modern healthcare professionals. Students will explore and practice the ways in which these communication tools can be used for the common good.

  Rotation Summary:
  
  This rotation marks the student’s first extended and regular exposure to the clinical and practical applications of the knowledge acquired in the paraclinical years. Students will deepen their understanding of the various subjects in the field of internal medicine and develop the essential skills required for a physician’s practice. During the rotation, students will build up their fundamental clinical skills and tools by taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, using and interpreting ancillary tests, designing diagnosis and treatment plans, writing admission summaries, and monitoring and discharging patients. Students will be trained in basic medical procedures such as taking blood, administering transfusions, and inserting catheters.

Students will also learn to analyze laboratory values in pediatrics, interpret imaging tests and ECG results in children, and provide first aid and emergency interventions in pediatric settings. They will also be trained to present patient cases in a structured manner and to work effectively within a multidisciplinary hospital department team.

This immersion will familiarize the students with the day-to-day routine of a practicing physician, in preparation for becoming doctors themselves.

  Rotation Summary:
  
  Emergency medicine is unique as a field that provides a response to a wide range of medical emergencies. It involves the treatment of diseases from different body systems, injuries, and trauma for a wide variety of patients. This rotation will expose students to the diverse range of medical cases that require immediate attention. Students will learn to identify medical emergencies, deepen their knowledge and skills in managing urgent situations, and gain insight into the patient’s journey through the emergency medicine department. The rotation will also familiarize students with the continuum of care, from pre-hospital settings to hospital-based treatment and the transition to community care. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and effectively utilizing the diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to the emergency department.

  The clinical rotation in psychiatry will equips students with foundational knowledge in psychiatry and mental health, relevant to all fields of medicine. It provides the groundwork for understanding psychiatric diagnosis, medication, and psychotherapy. Additionally, students will learn the principles of the psychiatric interview, a skill applicable not only to psychiatry but all medical fields.

  Family medicine is the cornerstone of primary care within the community, offering comprehensive health management that integrates into patients’ daily lives. Family physicians treat, monitor, and manage all aspects of their patients’ health. This rotation provides students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of primary care and enhance their expertise in addressing common medical conditions within the community setting.

  Rotation Summary:
  
  The world of neurology has undergone a transformation in recent decades, revolutionizing both diagnostic and therapeutic approaches with a combination of advanced imaging options, invasive interventions, genetic and biological therapies, and technologies that enable the modulation of the nervous system. This rotation provides students with exposure to a wide range of neurological conditions, and will train them to recognize symptoms and clinical signs, discuss investigative approaches, and formulate treatment plans for disorders of the brain and nervous system.

  Rotation Summary:
  
  Gynecology is a pivotal and dynamic field in medicine, encompassing all aspects of health unique to women, which evolve throughout the life cycle. This broad discipline integrates diverse areas of expertise, including medical and endocrine care, surgical interventions, imaging, emergency medicine, and more. During the rotation, students will gain direct and experiential exposure to the clinical aspects of women’s health in each of the subfields (obstetrics, gynecology and fertility). The rotation offers a comprehensive learning experience through hospital-based practice as well as primary care settings in the community.

  Rotation Summary:
  
  This rotation marks a significant step towards medical independence. Under the supervision and guidance of an experienced physician, the student will become an integral part of the team of the department they select. Student will choose areas in which they would like to deepen their knowledge, refine their clinical and manual skills, and gain hands-on experience in developing treatment plans, patient monitoring, teamwork, and communication skills. Students will be deeply engaged in clinical discussions and decision-making. This immersion will familiarize the students with the day-to-day routine of a practicing physician, in preparation for becoming doctors themselves.

  The elective rotation provides students with an opportunity to explore and deepen their personal interests while being exposed to a diverse range of medical specialties beyond the core rotations. Through the elective rotation, the students will become acquainted with the Israeli healthcare system and its challenges. This period solidifies the student’s professional identity, encouraging them to pursue avenues for self-realization. Elective options are extensive and include rotations in innovation centers, med-tech, research institutes, and clinical fields in Israel and abroad, thus equipping the students with the tools that will that will allow them to help shape the future of medicine in Israel.
