Volunteer Mentoring for Children in Foster Care — Neve WIZO foster homes in Herzliya

About the foster homes:

Neve WIZO is a network of four foster homes, located in private houses in the Gan Rashal neighborhood of the city of Herzliya. Each foster home is run as a household, with two house parents and 12 children living together as a family. Neve WIZO strives to provide the best care and educational assistance for children, with the aim of enhancing their school performance. The program seeks to guide the children in completing their education, meeting academic requirements, and realizing their skills and potential. The children attend community education frameworks, and the city’s education department provides substantial support by placing them in appropriate schools and enabling them to receive educational services.

This volunteering opportunity is Intended for sensitive and caring students who are interested in taking part in a personal, meaningful, long-term process with a child in a warm and supportive family setting.

Mentors will be paired with a child from the foster home on an ongoing basis throughout the school year, with the aim of creating a personal, supportive and development-promoting relationship. The volunteer role includes three main components:

• Social component —  shared activities, play, conversation, and trust-building
• Educational component —  homework help, test preparation, and cultivating positive study habits 
• Personal-emotional component — support, listening, and being a positive and consistent adult figure

Volunteering commitment:

• 1-2 hours a week, throughout the year
• Meetings during the week (in the afternoons) — in coordination with the foster home staff
• Commitment to regular meetings with the child throughout the year
• Professional guidance and preparatory and follow-up meetings with the volunteer coordinator
