Terrorist attacks and wars reshape majority-minority relations, yet existing research has focused predominantly on the responses of a single group – typically the majority, and on attitudinal outcomes, while neglecting cross-group friendships. Drawing on panel data of Jewish and Arab university students in Israel collected before and after the October 7th, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, we examine whether majority and minority group members respond differently to extreme violent events. Using individual fixed effects models that enable within-person comparisons, we examine two dimensions of intergroup relations: attitudes toward the outgroup and cross-group friendships.
We find consistent evidence of asymmetric responses. Jewish students exhibited a significant decline in attitudes toward Arabs following October 7th while Arab students' attitudes toward Jews remained stable. Cross-group friendship patterns diverged as well: Arab students reported a significant increase in cross-group friendships, whereas Jewish students showed no meaningful change. These asymmetric responses reveal the complex dynamics of majority-minority relations in times of crisis, particularly when the minority is perceived by the majority as affiliated with the external threat.
