Microsoft deploys FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) worldwide to accelerate our cloud services. Akin to silicon Legos, FPGAs can be programmed to assemble application-specific circuits, and then reprogrammed to form an entirely new design. As Moore’s Law continues to slow and CPUs performance plateaus, FPGAs provide a fast way to introduce the efficiency and performance of application specific ICs (ASICs), while maintaining the flexibility and general-purpose nature of software .This talk will present a brief overview of FPGAs, how and why they became an integral part of Microsoft’s cloud, and how we use them today, particularly in Azure Accelerated Networking, Bing, AI/ML, and additional use-cases in the future. In addition, this talk will present the greatest challenges to reconfigurable computing going forward and discuss future obstacles that must be addressed for reconfigurable cloud computing to reach its full potential.
