The Freie University of Berlin is a research university located in Berlin, Germany.


The Freie University was founded in West Berlin in 1948 with American support, today it is one of eleven German elite universities in the German Universities Excellence Initiative.

Accommodation


  • For international students, Freie University offers a limited number of accommodation options.
  • The placement follows the "first come, first served" principle. Kindly note that the registration will close when all options are fully booked.
  • Another easy way to find a room or an apartment is to search on the private housing market. Many students in Berlin live in shared apartments (WGs) and there is a relatively large supply of rooms.
  • You find these offers on the internet, in various Berlin magazines, or on notice boards in different places of the university.
  • 30 minutes to one hour commuting time on public transportation is nothing unusual - depending on where you live in the city. It is advisable to begin searching and finding a room/apartment in Berlin, prior to departure, since low priced accommodation is rare.
  • Rents in Berlin normally start at 350 Euro. Shared apartments tend to be less expensive.
  • On signing the lease your landlord will probably expect a deposit of three months, reimbursed with interest at the end of tenancy as long as nothing has been damaged.
  • Sometimes commission or a compensation for furniture is requested.

Exchange students must have comprehensive health insurance valid in Germany for enrollment as a full time student at FU Berlin AND for obtaining a residence permit.

 

Exchange students are exempt from university fees, but they still need to pay the so-called social fees of approx. 300 Euro per semester. These are non-university related fees and pay for the student union as well as for a public transportation ticket for the whole area of Berlin for the entire semester.
