The "Ma'ayan Bamidbar" program
The "Ma'ayan Bamidbar" program is a student initiative that promotes mutual learning and interaction between Hebrew and Arabic-speaking students. The program aims to create connections between Jewish and Arab students during their studies, assist Arab students academically, with an emphasis on improving Hebrew language skills and academic writing, deepen mutual understanding of both cultures, and increase familiarity with the Arabic language among Jewish students. The program operates nationwide in 20 educational institutions, with about 600 participants and a team of approximately 40 coordinators.
Program structure: Participants are paired in duos consisting of one Hebrew-speaking student and one Arabic-speaking student. Each duo meets once a week for a two-hour session. In the first part of the session, the Jewish student helps the Arab student develop Hebrew language skills by reading articles and reviewing the student's work to improve comprehension and expression in Hebrew. In the second part, the Arab student helps the Jewish student learn spoken Arabic. In addition to the one-on-one meetings, students will participate in four group meetings and a regional final event. Participation in the program grants 2 academic credits, contingent upon completing the required hours by the end of the academic year.
